Hello!
I am independent curator, Charlie Levine.I specialise in cultivating vibrant communities of artists and collaborators to co-create intricate art programs realised across various venues. My focus lies in meticulously designing and directing programs and shaping curatorial themes. I am dedicated to bringing in diverse partners, developing engaging opportunities, and establishing a lasting legacy for each project.
As a curator, I approach my work with a site-responsive mindset, using alternative methods to archive places, people, and events. My exploration of 'the frame' encompasses context, physical structures, and documentation, while 'the line' delves into drawing, journeys, architecture, and crafted pathways. Fiction serves as a catalyst for exhibition creation, intertwining with its contextual surroundings, and collaboration stands as a central source of inspiration. I am a fervent advocate for women and the arts, particularly in the realms of policy and place-making. My commitment lies in forging accessible entry routes into the arts and fostering a more diverse and representative sector. Currently, as an independent Curator and Artistic Director, my work spans the West Midlands, London, and Mumbai. I obtained an MA in Critical and Contextual Art Practices from Birmingham City University (2006), I began my curatorial journey as the founder and curator of TROVE, an independent art gallery in Birmingham (2009-2013). Over the years, I have collaborated on projects with esteemed institutions such as the British Museum, Historic England, Crafts Council, Roundhouse, British Library, Central Saint Martins, UCL Culture, Government Art Collection, ITV, Camden Arts Centre, Artangel, National Portrait Gallery, Wellcome Collection, Sluice__, and RIBA. In my current roles, I serve as the Director of the Institute of Curiosity & Curation, Co-Director, and co-founder of SqW:Lab—an international fellowship for creatives in Mumbai. Simultaneously, I have curated St. Pancras Wires, a captivating public art project in St. Pancras Station and am the Curator for UAL Awarding Body. Among my notable past positions and projects, I served as the Artistic Director of The Show Windows—a public realm project for Coventry UK City of Culture (2020-2022), and curated ITV Creates (2018-2021). Additionally, I held the role of Arts Service Manager for Camden Council, London (2016-2017), and worked as the Fair & Expo Manager and Curator for Sluice__ in London and New York (2013–2017). |
