Charlie Levine
Curator | Cultural Strategist
|
Charlie Levine is a curator and cultural strategist whose practice explores expanded forms of curating, working across physical, digital and public spaces to create site-responsive programmes, platforms and encounters.
Rooted in photography and an ongoing interest in the frame, Levine's practice explores how galleries, windows, screens, websites, architecture and public spaces can become places for art and storytelling. |
The Practice
|
SITE - Since her first exhibition, Levine has responded to the site, its histories, stories and potential to host artworks and happenings. From galleries and heritage buildings to streets, stations, shop windows and whole communities, site-responsive practice has remained central to her work.
FRAME - Literally, the space, venue, wall or screen; socially, academically, materially, through a gallery, book or publication; or thematically, Levine considers the frame within which artwork is encountered. This interest grew from her early research into photography and the art of the crop, and continues to shape how she thinks about exhibitions, images and audiences. |
STORY - The link between SITE and FRAME, story is the invisible thread running through much of Levine's curatorial work. Stories and fiction can provide the starting point for a project, while the curation and placement of artworks can create new stories, connections and conversations between works, places and audiences.
NETWORK - Connections, conversations and collaborations are central to Levine's practice and often sit at the heart of her key projects. She brings artists, organisations, communities, disciplines and places together to create programmes that are greater than the sum of their parts. |
