Manager, Arts and Tourism, Camden Council 2016 – 2017
Development Officer, Arts and Tourism, Camden Council, 2014 – 2016
As Arts Development Officer for Camden Council I was responsible for establishing and continuing relationships between various organisations in the borough, from art galleries to museums to parks to hotels. I help find and develop opportunities for people living and working in Camden as well as creating experiences for visitors. Key early projects included producing PLOT with José Demasceno at Holborn Library with Artangel and Outsidereal: an art trail in Camden with Simon Periton and Mark Titchner.
Significantly for me I was project manager / programme leader of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of Camden - Camden50 in 2015 which partnered with House of Illustration, Roundhouse, British Library, National Portrait Gallery, Camden Arts Centre, Primrose Bakery, UCL, Wellcome Collection and The Hospital Club. Camden 50 featured work by Ladies of the Press*, Elly Clarke, Dmitri Galitzine, Walls on Walls, RADA and the Camden Tour Guides.
I also led Camden Sentido, the 2016 annual programme linking Camden with Brazil during the Para/Olympic’s. Partners for Sentido included Camden Market that was home to a central programme which included performances, gigs, talks, exhibitions and workshops by partners including Central Saint Martin’s, Walls on Walls, Wembley to Soweto Foundation, Mais Um Disco, Camden Tour Guides and The Hospital Club. Camden Sentido also produced projects in partnership with Roundhouse and Frieze London.
During my time at Camden I also organised several exhibitions at Swiss Cottage Gallery including solo shows by Dmitri Galitzine, Patrick Hough, Caitlin Griffiths, Liz Hingley, Vishwa Shroff and Minnie Weisz, as well as group shows by Tash Kahn and John Ros, TARQ Gallery (IN), Chinmoyi Patel (IN), PIVO Gallery (BR) and Back to Front.
In 2016 I was promoted to lead the newly combined Arts and Tourism team with Libraries to create a single coherent cultural offer to residents, tourists and those who work and study in the borough. I developed the cultural offer across all venues and widened partnership opportunities to maximise finance and funding for projects.
As Manager of the Arts and Tourism team I communicated the team's activity throughout the wider organisation and through Camden to ensure arts were involved in many of the Council’s and local organisations deliverable activities. I led on the research and development of Camden’s first Cultural Framework and the London Borough of Culture bid. I oversaw Camden Kala and Camden Flux, the annual arts programme for 2017, which highlighted the best cultural venues and projects in Camden and beyond, as well as created unique engagement opportunities and platforms to talk about the UK:India Year of Culture and the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of male homosexuality.
Since I left Camden Council in 2018 we were successful in obtaining one of the six Exemplar Awards, Camden obtaining the largest of the six Cultural Impact Awards, as part of the inaugural London Borough of Culture schemes. I also curated the Camden Art Collection exhibition, Women Constructed, in 2018 to coincide with their annual programme, Camden Vox, celebrating the centenary of some women in the UK getting the vote. Women Constructed featured artwork by: Susan Allix, Prunella Clough, Linda Heywood, Phillippa James, Tess Jaray, Charlotte Jennings, Edwina Leapman, Jeannie Masoero and Valerie Thornton.
